Overview

Yoshikien Garden is a landscape garden located on the site of the former residence of the Kofukuji Temple priests. The grounds are divided into three distinct styles: a pond garden, a moss garden, and a tea ceremony garden. The pond garden utilizes the Yoshikigawa River to feed its water features. The moss garden is specifically noted for its carpet of lush green moss, which thrives in the humid climate of the valley. A traditional teahouse is situated within the tea ceremony garden area, reflecting Edo-period design principles. The garden is positioned adjacent to the more famous Isuien Garden. It covers approximately 2.1 hectares of land. The current layout was largely established during the Meiji period, following the purchase of the land by the Nara prefectural government. It is a public facility maintained by Nara Prefecture.
