Overview

Drogarati Cave is a subterranean limestone cavern located near Sami on the island of Kefalonia, Greece. Discovered approximately 300 years ago following a strong earthquake, the cave is characterized by its large central chamber, known as the 'Sala of Apotheosis.' This primary chamber features impressive stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over millions of years. The acoustic quality of the main hall is exceptionally high due to its dome-like structure. Consequently, the space is regularly utilized for formal musical performances and events. Visitors descend a concrete staircase to reach the cavern floor, which sits approximately 60 meters below the surface. The interior maintains a consistent temperature of around 18 degrees Celsius throughout the year. Humidity within the cave is high, contributing to the continued growth of the geological formations. Lighting is installed throughout the cave to illuminate the rock structures for public viewing.

Insider tips

Wear closed-toe shoes with good grip, as the stairs and pathways can be slippery due to constant moisture.

Bring a light jacket, as the temperature inside is significantly cooler than the external environment.

Check the cave's official schedule before arriving to ensure the venue is not closed for a private event or concert.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to navigate the cave without staying on the designated walking path to prevent accidental damage to the geological formations.

Good to know

Open daily during the high season from spring through autumn; may have restricted access during winter months.

Etiquette

Avoid touching the stalactites and stalagmites, as oils from human skin can inhibit their growth and damage the structures.
