Overview

Valle de Cuelgamuros is a monumental 20th-century complex located in the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains. It is home to a basilica excavated directly into the granite rock of a mountain ridge. The site features a 150-meter-tall stone cross, visible from significant distances across the landscape. The complex was formerly known as Valle de los Caídos and was renamed in 2022. It serves as a burial site for tens of thousands of individuals from the Spanish Civil War. The basilica interior is characterized by its scale and deep underground positioning. The grounds are managed by the Spanish state agency Patrimonio Nacional.
