Overview

Stare Selo Castle is one of the largest defensive fortifications in the Lviv region, originally constructed in the 15th century. The current Renaissance-style structure dates primarily to the 17th century when it was rebuilt by the Ostrogski and Sieniawski families. The citadel occupies a total area of approximately two hectares. It features a triangular defensive layout defined by high stone walls and surviving bastions. Much of the site remains in a state of semi-ruinous neglect, with significant restoration work having stalled over recent years. The structure is built from a combination of limestone and brick, characteristic of regional defensive architecture from the period. It stands as an example of a 'palazzo in fortezza' defensive residential complex. The site is currently unfenced and functions as an uncontrolled historic landmark.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, closed-toe hiking boots as the ground is uneven and filled with loose masonry.

Bring your own water and supplies, as there are no facilities or vendors on-site.

Be cautious when walking near the edges of the ramparts or under stone arches due to falling debris.

What to avoid

Avoid entering the enclosed tower interiors if the masonry appears cracked or unstable.
