Overview

The Passerelle himalayenne de l'Ébron is a 180-meter-long suspension bridge crossing the Ébron River at the Monteynard-Avignonet reservoir in the French Alps. Suspended 45 meters above the water, the structure provides a pedestrian connection between the communes of Lavars and Treffort. It is one of two Himalayan-style footbridges built in the area to bypass the deep gorges carved by the Ébron and Drac rivers. The bridge is constructed with a metal mesh flooring and reinforced cables, creating a swaying sensation underfoot. It forms a key section of a long-distance hiking loop around the turquoise waters of the lake. The area is prone to significant water-level fluctuations due to the operation of the Monteynard hydroelectric dam.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip as the paths to the bridge are uneven and often steep.

Bring a windbreaker, as the canyon creates a funnel effect that makes the wind chill significant even on sunny days.

Check local water level alerts if planning to combine the hike with a boat shuttle across the lake.

What to avoid

Attempting to cross if you have a fear of heights, as the metal mesh allows for a clear view of the void below.

Good to know

The bridge is accessible year-round, though sections of the approach trails may be temporarily closed following heavy winter snowfall or rockfall events.

Etiquette

Only one person or a small group should cross at a time to minimize excessive swaying; stay clear of the bridge entrance if others are crossing.
