Overview

Kota Damansara Community Forest Reserve is an 800-acre secondary lowland dipterocarp forest located within the urban landscape of Petaling Jaya. Established as a forest reserve in 2010, the area serves as a critical green lung and biodiversity corridor for the surrounding Klang Valley. It features a network of multi-use trails suitable for hiking and mountain biking, totaling approximately 10 to 12 kilometers in length. The reserve is managed through a collaboration between the Selangor State Forestry Department and the Kota Damansara Community Forest Society. It hosts a lake, wetlands, and diverse flora typical of Malaysia's tropical rainforest environment. Visitors can observe various wildlife species, including long-tailed macaques and numerous bird species, within the protected perimeter. The reserve acts as a recreational space for locals while maintaining active conservation efforts to prevent unauthorized development. It is one of the few remaining patches of primary and secondary forest within the high-density Petaling Jaya municipality.

Insider tips

Bring a high-strength mosquito repellent, as the humid forest environment is prone to insect activity.

Carry at least 1.5 liters of water, as there are no shops or water refill stations located inside the forest trails.

Check your clothing and gear for leeches, which are common in the undergrowth during or after rainy weather.

What to avoid

Attempting to hike during heavy rain due to the risk of slippery paths and potential fallen branches; venturing off-trail into unmarked sections.

Etiquette

Carry out all trash, do not feed the monkeys, stay strictly on marked trails to prevent soil erosion, and avoid loud noises to minimize wildlife disturbance.
