Interesting facts
1

The badlands are composed of a mix of clay, silt, and sand, known as the Gutingkeng Formation, which is prone to rapid erosion.

2

The landscape is nearly devoid of plants because the mudstone soil is highly alkaline and has poor water retention.

3

The area is technically classified as a 'mudstone badland,' a rare geological feature in Taiwan.

4

Heavy rainfall acts as the primary sculptor of these formations, cutting deep V-shaped gullies into the soft rock.

5

The high salt content in the exposed earth prevents standard forest growth, contributing to the stark aesthetic.

Overview

Tianliao Moon World is a unique badlands landscape characterized by stark, grey, barren ridges and gullies formed by the erosion of mudstone. The topography features steep cliffs and jagged peaks that resemble the lunar surface, resulting from the tectonic uplift of the Gutingkeng Formation. The site contains several distinct hiking trails, including the Moon Pond and Yingshi Lake, which allow visitors to walk amongst the clay-rich formations. The Tourist Information Center serves as the primary gateway to these geological trails. Due to the high salinity of the soil, the area supports very little vegetation, maintaining its desolate, otherworldly appearance. This natural phenomenon is continuously shaped by seasonal rainfall, causing the landscape to evolve over time.

Photo spot

The elevated viewing platform near the Tourist Information Center provides a panoramic vantage point over the Moon Pond area.

Insider tips

Bring a parasol or hat as there is almost no natural shade along the open trail sections.

Wear shoes with excellent grip, as the dried mudstone trails can be slippery and uneven.

Carry significantly more water than you expect to need, as the reflection of heat off the mudstone is intense.

What to avoid

Do not wander off-trail to climb the peaks, as the sediment is extremely loose and prone to crumbling under weight.

Etiquette

Stay strictly on marked paths to prevent erosion of the fragile, soft mudstone structures.
