Overview

CaixaForum Madrid is a cultural center located in a former early 20th-century power station known as the Central Eléctrica del Mediodía. The building is defined by its dramatic cantilevered structure which appears to hover above a public plaza. Architects Herzog & de Meuron preserved the original brick facade while adding an industrial-style metal roof made of oxidized cast iron. The exterior features a 24-meter-high vertical garden designed by Patrick Blanc, containing over 15,000 plants from 250 species. Inside, the design utilizes a floating staircase and open-plan galleries to host rotating contemporary art exhibitions. The venue functions as a multidisciplinary space for lectures, concerts, and workshops. It sits on the Paseo del Prado, a site recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage landscape.
