Overview

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) is a sustainable complex in Kallithea, Athens, housing the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera. Designed by architect Renzo Piano, the site features a 21-hectare park landscaped with native Mediterranean flora and a central artificial canal. The building utilizes a canopy structure covered in 5,600 solar panels, which provides energy to the facility and shades the public plaza. The site is situated on a former parking lot from the 2004 Olympic Games, now transformed into an elevated hill overlooking the Saronic Gulf. It serves as a multifunctional hub for performing arts, literature, and outdoor leisure. Public spaces include the Great Lawn, a Mediterranean Garden, and multiple amphitheaters. The complex received LEED Platinum certification, the highest environmental rating for sustainable buildings.
