The park was home to the Seth Peterson Cottage, a structure designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1958 and one of the few Wright designs available for public overnight stays.
The lake is an impoundment of Dell Creek, created by a dam originally built to power a sawmill in the 1800s.
The sandstone cliffs surrounding the lake were formed by the erosion of Cambrian-age sandstone, which dates back approximately 500 million years.
The park's no-wake rule applies to all motorized boats, effectively limiting them to electric trolling motors or paddle power.
The property was officially established as a state park in 1962.
Mirror Lake State Park is defined by its namesake lake, which remains calm due to a strict no-wake policy for motorized watercraft. The park features steep 50-foot sandstone cliffs that line the shoreline, providing a distinct topographical backdrop for recreation. It encompasses over 2,200 acres of terrain, including extensive pine and hardwood forests. Visitors access 19 miles of hiking trails that range from accessible nature walks to rugged paths along the gorge. The park is managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and maintains multiple campgrounds, including sites for tents and recreational vehicles. Winter recreation is supported through groomed cross-country ski trails and snowshoeing areas. The lake's restricted motorized use makes it a primary destination for kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. A dedicated swimming beach is available during the summer months. The park is situated within the driftless region, characterized by unglaciated, rugged topography.

Rent a kayak or canoe at the on-site rental facility to explore the narrow sandstone gorges where large motorboats cannot reach.
Visit the Seth Peterson Cottage viewing area even if you aren't staying overnight to observe the unique cantilevered architectural design.
Pack insect repellent, as the forested, damp terrain near the lake is prone to high mosquito activity during summer months.
Attempting to swim outside of the designated beach area, as drop-offs and currents near the dam and narrow gorges can be unpredictable.
Open year-round, though some seasonal amenities like kayak rentals and water stations are only available from late spring through early autumn.
Carry-in/carry-out trash policy applies; pets must be kept on a leash no longer than 8 feet at all times.
