Overview

Sairin-ji is the 48th temple on the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, situated on a hillside in the southern outskirts of Matsuyama. The temple is formally known as Seiryuzan Kaiso-in Sairin-ji and is dedicated to the Eleven-faced Kannon. The original temple was established by the monk Gyoki during the Nara period, though the current structures are modern reconstructions. The site is notable for its position on a mountain slope, requiring visitors to navigate stone staircases to reach the main hall. A striking feature of the temple grounds is the large, ornate bronze statue of Kannon that greets pilgrims at the entry area. The temple complex includes a main hall, a Daishi-do hall, and various smaller monuments related to the pilgrimage route. It serves as a significant stop for henro pilgrims traveling between temples 47 and 49.
