The clock design is modeled after the iconic 'Shinrokaku' tower of the Dogo Onsen Honkan.
The automated characters are based on the main figures from the 1906 Japanese novel 'Botchan'.
During the performance, the clock tower extends vertically to reveal hidden platforms.
It is built to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Dogo Onsen Honkan building.
A free-access foot bath is integrated directly into the base of the clock structure.
The Botchan Karakuri Clock is a mechanical landmark situated in the Dogo Onsen hot spring district of Matsuyama. Erected in 1994 to commemorate the centenary of the Dogo Onsen Honkan, the clock features a multi-tiered design inspired by the architecture of the historic spa building. Throughout the day, the clock undergoes a mechanical transformation where its panels expand and reveal automated figures from Natsume Soseki's famous novel, 'Botchan'. The show incorporates musical accompaniment and local folklore characters, including the Madonna and the title character. Adjacent to the clock stands a free-to-use foot bath, allowing visitors to soak while watching the mechanical performance. The structure serves as the primary meeting point and visual anchor for tourists entering the shopping arcade of Dogo Onsen.

Arrive 5–10 minutes early to secure a spot at the foot bath or a clear view of the clock face.
Bring a small towel with you if you intend to use the adjacent foot bath, as there are no dispensers provided.
Do not expect a long-form performance; the show is brief and designed to be viewed from the street.
The clock operates on a repetitive schedule throughout the day; additional performances may be added during weekends, holidays, and peak tourist seasons.
