A rare, heart-shaped Koi fish is occasionally sighted in the waters of Bishamon-numa.

4

The acidity levels and mineral deposits differ significantly between adjacent ponds, resulting in contrasting colors.

5

Overview

Goshikinuma Ponds are a cluster of volcanic crater lakes located in the Urabandai region, formed following the 1888 eruption of Mount Bandai. The lakes are noted for their varying hues—ranging from emerald green to cobalt blue—caused by differing mineral concentrations and the scattering of sunlight. The 'Goshikinuma Nature Trail' connects the main ponds over a distance of approximately 3.6 kilometers. The largest pond, Bishamon-numa, is the only one in the group that allows boat rentals. The ponds are situated within the Bandai-Asahi National Park, a designated Geopark. The chemical composition of the water, primarily volcanic allophane, alters the visual appearance of the lakes depending on the time of day and seasonal light conditions.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy walking shoes as the trail surface is uneven and can be muddy after rain.

Start your walk from the Urabandai Visitor Center side to have the main cluster of ponds ahead of you.

Bring insect repellent during the summer months as the humid forest environment attracts mosquitoes.

What to avoid

Do not expect to see all ponds immediately; realize that the full trail is a one-way path, not a loop, so plan transport accordingly.

Good to know

The walking trail may be inaccessible during winter months due to heavy snow accumulation.

Etiquette

Stay on the marked walking paths to preserve the fragile wetland ecosystem; do not feed fish or wildlife.
