Interesting facts
1

The dam's arch shape was calculated by engineers to withstand the immense water pressure of the 465-million-cubic-meter reservoir.

2

When the reservoir is full, the water level can submerge the base of the dam, making the visible portion of the structure just a fraction of its total footprint.

3

The Prometheus statue was installed in 1965, a year before the dam was officially commissioned.

4

Construction required the excavation of over 40 kilometers of underground tunnels through the surrounding rock.

5

The hydroelectric power plant is located underground, 104 meters beneath the riverbed, to maximize the pressure drop.

6

The dam contributed significantly to Romania's industrialization efforts during the 1960s.

Overview

Vidraru Dam is a 166.6-meter-high concrete arch dam located in the Argeș River valley of the Făgăraș Mountains. Completed in 1966, it ranks among the tallest dams in Europe and was designed to harness the hydroelectric potential of the Argeș and Vâlsan rivers. The structure supports a reservoir, Lake Vidraru, which spans 870 hectares and serves as a vital water management site. A large metal statue of Prometheus, created by sculptor Constantin Popovici, stands on a hill overlooking the dam to commemorate the electrification of Romania. The dam itself functions as the primary barrier creating the reservoir, with its crest serving as a public viewpoint. The surrounding area is part of the Transfăgărășan mountain road route, providing access to diverse alpine terrain. The site remains a functional hydroelectric facility managed by Hidroelectrica.

Insider tips

Bring a windbreaker or warm layer, as temperatures at the dam crest are significantly lower than in the valley due to the altitude.

Park in the designated zones near the statue to avoid blocking the narrow road traffic.

Visit the small observation platforms to get a clearer view of the vertical drop behind the dam wall.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to walk on the road shoulder during peak traffic hours as the road is narrow with heavy tourist vehicle flow.

Good to know

Access to the dam is dependent on the seasonal opening of the Transfăgărășan road, which is typically closed from late autumn through early summer due to snow.

Etiquette

Stay behind all safety railings; the drop is extreme and wind gusts are unpredictable.
