Overview

Hải đăng Đại Lãnh, also known as Mũi Điện Lighthouse, is a historic French-built structure situated on the easternmost tip of mainland Vietnam. Constructed in 1890, the lighthouse features a distinctive architecture that serves both as a navigational aid for ships and a geographical landmark. It stands atop a rocky cliff overlooking the South China Sea, marking the cape where the sun is said to rise earliest in the country. The site includes a spiral staircase leading to the lantern room, providing 360-degree views of the coastline and the Bai Mon beach below. The structure was significantly renovated in 1997 to restore its original operational capacity and aesthetics. The surrounding area remains relatively undeveloped, characterized by granite rock formations and coastal shrubbery. Visitors reach the main entrance via a maintained pathway that winds upward from the base of the cape. It currently operates under the oversight of the Vietnam Maritime Safety Corporation.

Insider tips

Wear footwear with high-traction soles as the pathway and rocks can be slippery.

Carry a physical hat and high-SPF sunscreen, as there is minimal shade once you begin the ascent from the beach area.

Plan to visit on a weekday to avoid the increased foot traffic from domestic tour groups.

What to avoid

Attempting the climb during the peak heat of the day (noon to 2 PM) or during monsoon rains, which make the cliffside paths hazardous.

Etiquette

Maintain a quiet demeanor near the lighthouse quarters, as this remains a functioning residential facility for maritime staff.
