Overview

Pieniny National Park is a limestone mountain range spanning the border of southern Poland and northern Slovakia, distinguished by the deep Dunajec River Gorge. The park covers approximately 23 square kilometers and is characterized by steep, rugged cliffs and narrow river canyons. The Dunajec River forms a natural boundary and is the primary feature for traditional wooden raft excursions. The ecosystem is a biodiversity hotspot, containing over 1,100 species of vascular plants and numerous endemic species like the Pieniny dandelion. Three crowns (Trzy Korony) is the highest peak accessible to tourists, offering a 360-degree observation deck. The landscape was shaped by tectonic activity and subsequent erosion of limestone formations. It remains one of the smallest national parks in Poland while maintaining high visitor density due to its unique geological features.

Insider tips

Purchase a combined ticket for river rafting and trail access to save time at peak entry points.

Bring sturdy, non-slip footwear as limestone paths become extremely slippery when wet.

Carry a valid ID card, as parts of the hiking trails run directly along the international border with Slovakia.

What to avoid

Attempting to hike the high-altitude trails in simple street shoes or sandals, which leads to frequent minor injuries.

Good to know

High-altitude trails and specific pedestrian border crossings may be subject to winter closures due to snow conditions.

Etiquette

Stick to marked trails to protect the fragile limestone flora; do not remove rocks or plants; maintain silence in designated nature protection zones.
