Overview

The Aukštumala Trail is a 1.2-kilometer wooden boardwalk winding through one of the largest raised bogs in the Nemunas Delta Regional Park. It is globally significant as the site of the world's first scientific peat bog study, conducted by German botanist Carl Albert Weber in 1902. The trail features a 2.5-meter-high observation tower that provides a panoramic view of the vast wetland landscape. Visitors can observe rare flora, including carnivorous sundew plants and wild rosemary, which thrive in the acidic, nutrient-poor environment. The ecosystem acts as a critical carbon sink and provides a habitat for specialized avian species. Informational placards along the route detail the formation of peat and the historical exploitation of the bog. The landscape is characterized by its mosaic of pools, hummocks, and moss-covered terrain. The boardwalk was constructed to minimize human impact on the fragile peat surface while allowing public access.

Insider tips

Bring binoculars for birdwatching, as the open expanse allows for long-distance wildlife observation.

Use insect repellent during late spring and summer to avoid mosquitoes and horseflies common in wetland areas.

Stay strictly on the wooden boardwalk to protect the vulnerable peat surface and avoid getting stuck.

What to avoid

Attempting to walk off the boardwalk; the soft, boggy ground is hazardous and ecologically sensitive.

Etiquette

No smoking or open fires due to extreme fire risk in dry peat; keep pets on a leash.
