Overview

Naufragados Beach is the southernmost point of Florianópolis, accessible only via a coastal hiking trail or by boat. The name originates from a 1752 shipwreck where survivors sought refuge on this shore. The beach features a 19th-century lighthouse, the Farol dos Naufragados, built in 1861 to warn ships of the dangerous rocky passages nearby. It faces the small Ilha de Araçatuba, which contains the ruins of the Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Araçatuba. The landscape is characterized by rough Atlantic swells, dense rainforest vegetation, and preserved colonial-era fortifications. Surfing is common on the eastern side of the beach due to high wave activity. The area is located within the limits of the Outeiro do Ribeirão archaeological site, highlighting regional historical preservation. Freshwater streams flow from the surrounding hills directly onto the sand.
