Overview

Top Station is a prominent vantage point situated at an elevation of approximately 1,700 meters above sea level within the Kannan Devan Hills of the Western Ghats. It marks the border between the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Historically, it served as the uppermost railway station on the Kundala Valley Light Railway, connecting to the tea plantations of Munnar. The overlook provides expansive visibility over the Theni district plains and the surrounding mountain ranges. The area is characterized by high-altitude grassland ecosystems and steep valleys that frequently experience heavy mist cover. It is situated within the vicinity of the Kurinjimala Sanctuary, an area designated for the protection of the Neelakurinji shrub.

Insider tips

Bring a windproof jacket, as high-altitude winds create significant chill even during sunny days.

Arrive early to ensure visibility before the mid-day thermal clouds obscure the valley views.

Wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear suitable for walking on uneven, rocky mountain paths.

What to avoid

Do not wander off the marked stone pathways, as the cliff edges are unprotected and terrain is unstable.

Good to know
