The waterfall is formed by the rapid erosion of volcanic andesite rock strata.
It is officially recognized as the highest natural waterfall in Hungary by vertical drop.
The surrounding valley was historically used for ore mining, with remnants of ancient shafts visible nearby.

The Ilona-völgyi vízesés (Ilona Valley Waterfall) is Hungary's highest natural vertical waterfall, dropping approximately 10 meters over a rocky cliff face. Located within the Mátra Mountains, the cascade is situated at the terminus of the Ilona Valley. The site is characterized by an amphitheater-like enclosure of vertical andesite rock walls. The surrounding forest consists primarily of beech trees, which provide significant shade. Access is provided via a maintained trail that follows the Ilona stream. As of June 2026, the area remains accessible as a public nature site managed within the national park system. The waterfall is fed by the Ilona Creek, which originates near the upper slopes of Mount Csór-hegy.
