Overview

Mount Ibuki is a 1,377-meter peak straddling the border of Shiga and Gifu prefectures, serving as the highest point in Shiga Prefecture. It is one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains and is renowned for its diverse alpine flora. The mountain is ecologically distinct because it sits at the convergence of northern and southern climate zones. A drive-way provides access to a ninth-station parking area, significantly reducing the ascent distance for casual hikers. The summit features a flat plateau that houses a small village of mountain huts and souvenir shops. Because of its location near the Sea of Japan, the peak experiences some of the world's highest recorded snowfall, reaching depths of over 11 meters in peak winters. The trails offer sweeping views of Lake Biwa to the west and the Nobi Plain to the east.

Insider tips

Bring layers even in summer, as the summit temperatures are significantly lower than in the valley below.

Use trekking poles if walking from the base, as the lower sections are steep and can be slippery after rain.

Check local weather alerts for lightning, as the summit is highly exposed to sudden storms.

What to avoid

Attempting to hike from the base in standard street shoes, as the terrain is rugged and steep.

Good to know

The Ibuki-yama Drive-way is typically closed during the deep winter months due to heavy snow accumulation.
