Overview

Fujiidera Temple, also known as Fujii-ji, serves as the 11th temple on the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. The temple is historically significant as the starting point for the arduous 'henro-korogashi' mountain trail leading to the 12th temple, Shosan-ji. It belongs to the Shingon sect of Buddhism. The main deity worshipped here is the Yakushi Nyorai. The grounds feature a distinctive Wisteria (Fuji) tree, which is associated with the temple's name and origins. Pilgrims traditionally stop here to prepare physically and mentally before beginning the most difficult mountain ascent of the entire 88-temple circuit.
