Overview

Notre Dame d'Afrique is a Catholic basilica located on a 124-meter-high cliff overlooking the Bay of Algiers. Built between 1858 and 1872, the structure features a unique Romano-Byzantine architectural style designed by architect Jean-Eugène Fromageau. The basilica is oriented uniquely with the apse facing north towards the sea rather than the traditional east. It is globally recognized for the inscription behind the altar: 'Our Lady of Africa, pray for us and for the Muslims'. The interior is adorned with vibrant mosaics and an iconic silver-gilt statue of the Virgin Mary. The site serves as a symbol of religious cohabitation in Algeria. The exterior facade is constructed from stone sourced locally from the region. The church underwent significant structural restoration following the 2003 Boumerdès earthquake to stabilize its foundations.

Photo spot

The terrace wall to the left of the main entrance provides a panoramic view of the coastline and the basilica's architectural silhouette.

Insider tips

Visit during the late afternoon to observe the sunset over the Mediterranean Sea from the cliffside terrace.

Bring a light jacket, as the altitude and coastal winds can make the summit significantly cooler than the city center.

Check the local bulletin board at the entrance for information regarding community masses or occasional choral performances.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to walk from the lower city districts to the basilica, as the steep elevation gain is strenuous and the route is primarily industrial.

Good to know

Open daily, though the interior may be restricted during private prayer services or scheduled religious ceremonies.

Etiquette

Maintain a quiet, respectful demeanor; modest dress is required, covering shoulders and knees.
