Overview

The Martyrs Memorial, locally known as Maqam Echahid, is a reinforced concrete monument overlooking Algiers, designed to commemorate the Algerian War of Independence. It consists of three palm-shaped fins that converge toward a central point, symbolizing the three pillars of the Algerian revolution: industry, agriculture, and culture. The structure stands 92 meters tall and is finished in a distinct off-white color. Located on the heights of the El Madania plateau, it sits above the Riad El Feth shopping and leisure complex. An eternal flame is housed in a crypt beneath the monument, which serves as a site of national commemoration. The surrounding plaza offers expansive views of the Bay of Algiers. The memorial was inaugurated in 1982 to mark the 20th anniversary of Algerian independence. It remains the most recognized national landmark in the capital.
