Overview

Jizoji Temple is the fifth temple on the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage circuit and serves as the head temple of the Shingon-zendo sect. It is colloquially known as the temple of the 'five hundred Arhats' due to the extensive collection of stone statues housed within its precincts. The temple grounds feature a prominent wooden gate and a main hall dedicated to Enmei Jizo Bosatsu. Visitors can explore the multi-story pagoda and the landscaped gardens surrounding the main temple buildings. As a significant stop for henro pilgrims, the site maintains a focused atmosphere dedicated to traditional Buddhist practice. The current structures reflect a history of rebuilding after fires destroyed earlier iterations of the complex.

Insider tips

Carry your pilgrimage book or specialized cloth to receive the official temple seal and calligraphy from the resident monks.

Look for the wooden statues of the Arhats housed in the dedicated viewing area, as they are the temple's most distinctive feature.

Walk the perimeter of the main hall to appreciate the architectural details that differ from later, more ornate temples on the circuit.

What to avoid

Touching the stone statues, as many are fragile, and blocking the path of pilgrims who are performing their daily worship rituals.

Etiquette

Maintain silence, remove hats, and bow slightly before entering the main hall. Do not photograph the inner sanctum or personal devotional items of monks.
