Overview

The Sultan 1. Murat Türbesi, also known as the Hüdavendigar Tomb, serves as the final resting place of Sultan Murad I, the third ruler of the Ottoman Empire. Constructed in 1366 by his son Bayezid I, the original structure was heavily damaged in the 1855 Bursa earthquake and subsequently rebuilt in 1863 in an eclectic style. The tomb is located within a garden complex that includes a mosque and a madrasa, collectively known as the Hüdavendigar Complex. Murad I was the only Ottoman sultan to die on the battlefield, falling at the 1389 Battle of Kosovo. His internal organs were interred at the site of his death, while his body was brought to Bursa for burial. The current tomb building displays a mixture of neoclassical and traditional Ottoman architectural elements, distinct from the 14th-century original. It remains a significant site for historical study regarding the architectural evolution of Ottoman funerary monuments.
