No. 29 Tosa Kokubun-ji is the 29th temple of the 88-temple Shikoku Pilgrimage, founded by the monk Gyoki in the 8th century at the behest of Emperor Shomu. The current main hall, or Kondo, dates to 1558 and is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. It is one of the few provincial temples (Kokubun-ji) where the original layout from the Nara period remains largely intact. The temple grounds feature a prominent Niomon gate and a collection of historical stone monuments. It is situated on a hillside overlooking the Nankoku plain, providing a strategic view of the surrounding valley.
