Overview

Zenrakuji is the 30th temple of the 88-temple Shikoku Pilgrimage, historically linked to the worship of Kannon Bodisattva. The temple is unique for its historical site relocation; it was moved to its current position in 1884 after the Shinbutsu Bunri movement led to its temporary closure and destruction during the Meiji period. It belongs to the Chisan school of Shingon Buddhism. The main hall houses a statue of Amida Nyorai, while the Daishi-do hall is dedicated to Kobo Daishi. The site features a distinctive concrete main hall constructed in the post-war period. It sits in a suburban residential context in Kochi City, serving both local devotees and long-distance pilgrims.
