Overview

The Europabrücke Neurüdnitz-Siekierki is a 665-meter-long bridge connecting the German village of Neurüdnitz with the Polish village of Siekierki across the Oder River. Originally built in 1892 as a railway bridge, it was destroyed during World War II and remained derelict for over 75 years. In 2022, the structure was reopened as a dedicated pedestrian and bicycle crossing, becoming the longest bridge of its kind in the Oderbruch region. The renovation repurposed the surviving historical steel truss segments to support a new path for non-motorized traffic. It serves as a vital link between the Oder-Neisse Cycle Route and the network of Polish bike paths in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. The bridge spans a protected nature reserve, offering elevated views of the river floodplains and surrounding wetlands.

Insider tips

Bring binoculars for birdwatching, as the surrounding Oder floodplains are a major habitat for migratory species.

Check local wind conditions, as the bridge is exposed and can be quite windy even on calm days.

Ensure you carry valid identification, as you are crossing an international border.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to cross in motorized vehicles, as the path is strictly for pedestrians and cyclists.

Etiquette

Cyclists must dismount or cycle slowly when the bridge is crowded; keep to the right to allow oncoming traffic to pass.
