Interesting facts
1

The fan-shaped columnar joint here is considered the only one of its kind in the world.

2

These formations were created during the Cenozoic Era when volcanic lava cooled and contracted.

3

The trail features a dedicated 13-meter long suspension bridge specifically built to allow visitors to view the geological structures from above.

4

The entire trail is approximately 1.7 kilometers long, starting at Eupcheon Port and ending at Haseo Port.

Overview

The Yangnam Columnar Jointing Padosorigil is a 1.7-kilometer coastal trail featuring rare fan-shaped columnar joints formed by volcanic activity. Unlike typical vertical basalt columns found elsewhere, these joints exhibit a unique radial pattern resembling a folding fan. The trail follows the coastline of Gyeongju, connecting Eupcheon-ri and Haseo-ri. It is part of the Gyeongju National Park area and provides direct views of the East Sea. The path includes wooden decks and suspension bridges that cross over the rocky shore. These geological formations were designated as a Natural Monument of South Korea in 2012. The name 'Padosorigil' translates to 'Sound of Waves Trail,' reflecting the audible environment created by the sea hitting the volcanic rock.

Photo spot

The observation deck overlooking the 'Fan-shaped Columnar Joint' (Ganseong-hyeong) provides the most distinct photographic angle.

Insider tips

Wear comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes as the path includes sections of wooden decking and uneven coastal terrain.

Carry sun protection, as the trail is almost entirely exposed to direct sunlight with very little shade.

Walk from Eupcheon-ri toward Haseo-ri to align with the flow of local cafe amenities located at the start of the trail.

What to avoid

Do not attempt the trail during typhoon warnings or heavy rain, as coastal waves can spray onto the lower sections of the boardwalk.

Etiquette

Stay within designated wooden walkways to protect the fragile volcanic rock formations; do not climb on the columns.
