Overview

Golgulsa Temple is a historic cave temple complex carved directly into the granite face of Mount Hamwol in Gyeongju. The site is uniquely defined by a 4-meter-tall Buddha statue carved into the natural rock cliff, accessible via a steep set of stairs. It serves as the primary training center for Sunmudo, a traditional Korean Buddhist martial art. The temple features seven rock caves arranged vertically along the cliff face. Unlike traditional wooden temple architecture, these caves were utilized for meditation and monastic living during the Silla Dynasty. The site functions as a working monastery that offers regular temple stay programs for international visitors.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy walking shoes with good grip for the steep, uneven stone stairs leading to the cave.

If you have sensitive knees, prioritize the lower temple areas as the climb to the top cave is strenuous.

Check the daily Sunmudo demonstration schedule upon arrival as practice times vary.

What to avoid

Do not attempt the final steep ladder-like climb to the highest cave if you suffer from vertigo or lack proper footwear.

Etiquette

Maintain silence in meditation areas; remove shoes before entering temple buildings; dress modestly covering shoulders and knees.
