Interesting facts
1

The cave is situated in a geological region known for intense sinkhole and cavern formation due to carbonate dissolution.

2

The interior temperature remains relatively stable throughout the year, typically hovering around 15°C.

3

The site is often visited in tandem with the nearby Cennet-Cehennem sinkholes, located only a few hundred meters away.

4

The name 'Astım' (Asthma) is derived from the historical, unsubstantiated local belief that the cave atmosphere alleviates asthma symptoms.

5

The cave is formed in Mesozoic-era limestone, common throughout the Taurus Mountains range.

Overview

Asthma Cave (Astım Mağarası) is a 200-meter-long subterranean karst system located near the Narlıkuyu coastal area. The cave is characterized by its high humidity levels and rich concentrations of stalactites and stalagmites. A spiral metal staircase provides access to the main chamber, which descends approximately 15 meters below ground level. The cave is part of the broader Cennet and Cehennem (Heaven and Hell) karst complex in the Mersin province. Geological formations within the site feature complex branching galleries that remain damp year-round. It is named for the local folklore belief that the cave's air quality provides relief to individuals suffering from respiratory conditions.

Insider tips

Wear shoes with high-traction rubber soles, as the stairs and pathways become extremely slippery due to constant dripping water.

Bring a light sweater, as the humidity and temperature drop are significant compared to the Mediterranean heat outside.

Hold onto the handrails at all times when descending, as the stairs are steep and narrow.

What to avoid

Attempting to explore beyond the designated metal walkways, as the cave floor is uneven, muddy, and dangerous.

Etiquette

Avoid touching the stalactites and stalagmites, as oils from human skin can disrupt their mineral growth; refrain from loud noises due to the echo-prone chamber.
