Overview

The Shree Mahalaxmi Temple in Panaji serves as the central religious site for the GSB (Gaud Saraswat Brahmin) community in Goa. The deity, Goddess Mahalaxmi, is considered the presiding deity of the city. The current structure, dating back to 1818, replaced an earlier 15th-century shrine destroyed during the Portuguese Inquisition. It is notable for being one of the few Hindu temples allowed to be rebuilt in Goa during the colonial era. The temple architecture features a prominent dome and a spacious sabhamandap (assembly hall). The sanctum sanctorum houses a black stone idol of the goddess depicted with four hands. The temple complex is integrated into the urban fabric of Panaji, specifically along Dr. Dada Vaidya Road.
