Overview

Serra Grossa is a coastal mountain ridge separating the city center of Alicante from the beaches of La Albufereta. The site is a protected natural area characterized by its rugged limestone terrain and distinct Mediterranean vegetation. A network of marked trails allows hikers to reach the peak, which sits at an elevation of approximately 172 meters above sea level. The ridge serves as a geological transition point between the urban sprawl and the Mediterranean coastline. Remnants of historical mining activity are visible along the slopes. The area provides panoramic views of the Alicante harbor, Santa Barbara Castle, and the surrounding coastline. It is a popular destination for urban trekking and trail running among local residents. The site is currently maintained as an open-access municipal environmental park.

Photo spot

The summit peak provides a 360-degree view that captures both the Alicante skyline and the curve of the Mediterranean coast.

Insider tips

Bring significantly more water than you expect to consume as there are no natural water sources or facilities on the trails.

Use trekking poles if you have them, as the path surfaces are often loose and steep in sections.

Start the ascent early to avoid the midday sun, as the path is almost entirely exposed with no natural shade.

What to avoid

Do not attempt the hike during the midday hours in summer, as heat exhaustion risk is high due to the lack of canopy cover.

Etiquette

Wear sturdy, closed-toe hiking footwear with good grip; do not remove any geological material from the park.
