Overview

The Sultan Beyazıt II Mosque complex is a 15th-century Ottoman imperial külliye situated on the banks of the Tunca River in Edirne. Commissioned by Sultan Beyazıt II and designed by architect Hayreddin, the complex represents an innovative integration of a central prayer space with specialized medicinal and social welfare facilities. The structure features a large central dome supported by two massive pillars and secondary semi-domes, characteristic of the transition period in Ottoman architecture. Beyond the prayer hall, the complex originally included a hospital (darüşşifa), medical school (medrese), kitchen, and granary. The darüşşifa is particularly notable for its unique hexadecagonal hall designed to provide acoustic and therapeutic comfort for patients. The complex served the community for over 400 years and is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site candidate.
