Overview

Singosari Temple is a 13th-century funerary temple constructed during the Singhasari Kingdom of East Java. The structure is built from andesite stone and stands as a primary remnant of the kingdom's transition between Hindu and Buddhist religious traditions. The base of the temple features ornate kala-makara carvings typical of East Javanese architectural style. It was built as a memorial to King Kertanegara, the final monarch of the Singhasari dynasty. The site contains an open-air courtyard displaying several stone statues, including Agastya and Ganesha. The temple remains unfinished, evidenced by the uncarved surfaces on parts of the monument. It is located in the Malang Regency, serving as an archaeological site rather than an active place of worship.

Insider tips

  • Bring an umbrella or raincoat, as the area experiences frequent rain showers even outside the main monsoon season.

  • Hire a local guide to interpret the specific iconography of the surrounding statues, as there is limited on-site signage.

  • Wear comfortable, non-slip footwear for navigating the uneven stone paths and grassy grounds.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to touch or rub the ancient statues, as this accelerates the erosion of the porous andesite stone.

Etiquette

Dress modestly by covering shoulders and knees; refrain from climbing on the temple stones or statues.
