Overview

The Olomouc Astronomical Clock is one of the few surviving examples of heliocentric astronomical clocks globally. Located on the northern wall of the Olomouc Town Hall, it underwent a complete aesthetic reconstruction in the 1950s during the Socialist Realist era. The clock face replaces traditional saint iconography with workers, farmers, and scientists, reflecting the political ideology of the time. It features a rotating mosaic depicting the changing of the seasons and a calendar dial. The mechanism includes a parade of mechanical figures that perform during its daily cycle. It is the only astronomical clock in the world to be officially redesigned according to socialist art principles.
