Overview

The Monument to the Unknown Hero is a monumental cenotaph located at the summit of Avala mountain, overlooking Belgrade. Designed by sculptor Ivan Meštrović and completed in 1938, the structure serves as a mausoleum for soldiers killed during World War I. The edifice is constructed from black Jablanički granite and features eight caryatids representing different ethnic groups from the former Kingdom of Yugoslavia. It occupies the former site of a medieval fortress known as Žrnov, which was demolished to accommodate the memorial’s construction. The monument stands 14.5 meters tall and is accessed via an expansive stone staircase. It remains a national symbol of Yugoslavian unity and resistance. The location offers panoramic views of the Šumadija region and the Serbian capital.
