The park contains one of the few remaining salmon-bearing streams within the Tacoma city limits.
The mountain bike trails were designed and constructed in partnership with the Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance.
Portions of the park were formerly utilized as a landfill site, which underwent extensive capping and environmental reclamation.
The park serves as a migration corridor for various local wildlife, including black-tailed deer and coyotes.
The canyon topography creates a microclimate that remains significantly cooler and more humid than the surrounding suburban areas.
Swan Creek Park is a 373-acre canyon environment managed by Metro Parks Tacoma that features a salmon-bearing stream and extensive forested terrain. The park provides over 5 miles of mountain bike trails, including specialized single-track courses designed for varying skill levels. Pedestrians can utilize the canyon floor trail system, which follows the creek through a mature second-growth conifer forest. A community garden space and an off-leash dog area are located on the upper plateau near the park's main entrance. The ravine walls provide a distinct topographical transition from the residential neighborhoods above to the creek level below. Recent site enhancements include habitat restoration projects aimed at preserving the local salmon population.

Wear waterproof hiking boots, as the canyon trails can remain muddy throughout the year regardless of recent rainfall.
Stay on marked trails to avoid damaging sensitive salmon habitat and riparian restoration zones.
Keep dogs on a leash outside of the designated off-leash dog area.
Do not attempt to access the steep ravine slopes off-trail, as the soil is highly erosive and unstable.
Stay on designated paths; pack out all trash to maintain the riparian environment; maintain control of pets at all times.
