Overview

Augusta Raurica is the oldest known Roman colony on the Rhine, founded around 44 BC. The site features the best-preserved Roman theater north of the Alps, still utilized for open-air performances. Visitors can explore the Roman House, a reconstructed dwelling complete with wall paintings and authentic interior layouts. The site spans a vast archaeological park containing remains of temples, a forum, and a curia. The onsite museum houses the 'Augst Silver Treasure,' one of the most significant late-Roman silver finds worldwide. Excavations at the site continue to be active, with portions of the settlement still buried beneath the modern village of Augst. The site offers an immersive look at daily life in a Roman provincial capital, featuring functioning replicas and interactive workshops. It serves as an open-air museum where landscape and ancient architecture are integrated.
