Overview

Macela's Rock (Pedra da Macela) is a prominent granite summit standing at approximately 1,840 meters above sea level on the border of Paraty, Rio de Janeiro, and Cunha, São Paulo. The peak offers a panoramic vantage point reaching the Paraty coastline and Ilha Grande Bay to the south and the Paraíba Valley to the north. The ascent follows a steep, paved concrete path constructed to service communication towers located at the summit. Vegetation transitions from Atlantic Forest at the base to high-altitude campos de altitude near the crest. Clear conditions are essential, as the peak is frequently shrouded in heavy mist or low-hanging clouds.

Photo spot

The highest concrete platform at the summit, providing an unobstructed 360-degree view of the valley and coastline.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, closed-toe hiking shoes as the paved incline is steep and can be slippery when wet.

Bring a windbreaker or thermal layers, as high-altitude winds at the summit are common regardless of the temperature below.

Carry at least 1.5 liters of water per person, as there are no services or potable water sources along the trail.

What to avoid

Attempting the climb during active rain or heavy fog, as the lack of visibility renders the view nonexistent and the steep concrete path becomes hazardous.

Etiquette

Pack out all trash and respect the quiet nature of the conservation area.
