Overview

Looking Glass Falls is a 60-foot waterfall located in the Pisgah National Forest, characterized by its high volume of water cascading over a granite cliff. The waterfall is named after Looking Glass Rock, a nearby mountain dome that reflects sunlight like a mirror when frozen. It is one of the few waterfalls in Western North Carolina that is directly visible from a roadside pull-off, requiring minimal physical exertion for viewing. A series of stairs leads visitors from the parking area down to the plunge pool at the base of the falls. The waterfall is fed by Looking Glass Creek, which originates on the slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The area remains a popular destination due to its proximity to the Transylvania County waterfall corridor.

The observation deck at the top of the stairs provides a framed view, while the base of the stairs offers the best perspective of the falling water against the cliff.

Insider tips

Wear footwear with high-traction soles as the rocks near the plunge pool are constantly wet and slippery.

Visit during the shoulder seasons of spring or autumn to avoid peak summer parking congestion.

Exercise extreme caution if venturing into the water, as the current can be deceptive and the rocks are covered in slick algae.

What to avoid

Attempting to swim or wade in the plunge pool during high-flow conditions; leaving valuables visible in your vehicle.

Etiquette

Stay on the designated staircase and paths to prevent soil erosion and damage to native flora; do not climb on the wet rock faces.
