Overview

Chestnut Ridge Metro Park is the first park in the Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks system to transition from the glaciated plains to the unglaciated Appalachian foothills. The landscape features a distinct topographical shift, with a ridge rising nearly 200 feet above the surrounding terrain. Visitors can access over 20 miles of trails, including paths designated for mountain biking and horseback riding. The park sits at the northern edge of the Hocking Hills region, characterized by deep ravines and mixed hardwood forests. The Ridge Trail offers views of the Columbus skyline on clear days, despite being located approximately 15 miles southeast of the city center. A dedicated mountain bike trail system provides varied terrain for intermediate riders. The site includes a stocked pond for fishing and multiple picnic areas. The topography creates a microclimate that supports plant species typically found further south in Ohio.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, closed-toe hiking boots, as the ridge trails contain exposed roots and uneven rocky surfaces.

Bring a mountain bike if you want to explore the dedicated single-track trails that are separated from foot traffic.

Check the park map before starting your hike, as the elevation changes on the Ridge Trail are steeper than most local paths.

What to avoid

Attempting the rugged trails immediately after heavy rain, as the clay-heavy soil becomes extremely slippery and prone to damage.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to prevent erosion on the steep hillsides; mountain bikers must yield to hikers.
