Overview

The Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica in Fort Kochi is one of the eight Basilicas in India and serves as a co-cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cochin. Originally built by the Portuguese in 1505, the structure was later demolished by the British and rebuilt in the current Gothic Revival style in 1905. It was elevated to the status of a Basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1984. The interior features Indo-European architecture with high vaulted ceilings and detailed wall paintings. The sanctuary showcases a reproduction of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper. The exterior is characterized by two prominent spires and a pastel-colored facade. It remains an active parish church serving the local community in Kochi.
