Overview

Tenjōji is a Shingon-sect Buddhist temple located on Mount Maya, originally founded in 646 AD by the monk Hōdō. The current structures were rebuilt in 1976 after the historic temple complex was destroyed by fire in 1976. The temple is dedicated to Maya-bunin, the mother of Siddhartha Gautama, a rarity in Japan. The site serves as the 22nd temple on the Shin-Saigoku pilgrimage circuit. Visitors can find a stone statue dedicated to the unborn, alongside expansive views of the Kobe cityscape and Osaka Bay. It is a key stop for hikers navigating the trails of the Rokko Mountain range. The temple grounds house several smaller sub-temples and stone monuments reflecting its long religious history.
