It is best known as the site where King Richard the Lionheart of England was held captive by Duke Leopold V of Austria between 1192 and 1193. The ruins consist of stone walls, archways, and foundation outlines accessible via a steep trail from the village below. From the summit, the site provides an unobstructed panorama of the Danube bend and the surrounding terraced vineyards. The original structure was largely destroyed by Swedish forces during the Thirty Years' War in 1645. It remains an unstaffed outdoor site maintained by the municipality of Dürnstein.
