Constructed in 1640 to protect against foreign invasions, it features a unique three-layered fortification design with outer, middle, and inner walls. The site spans over 11 kilometers in circumference and was historically utilized as a strategic military outpost for the Gyeongsang-do region. Archaeological remains include the remnants of government offices, storehouses for grain, and military training grounds. It is designated as Historic Site No. 216 by the South Korean government. Insider tips

Wear sturdy, high-grip hiking boots as the paths consist of uneven mountain trails and exposed rock sections.

Bring sufficient water and snacks, as there are no vendor facilities within the primary historic wall perimeters.

Check weather reports in advance; mountain conditions at this elevation change rapidly and can be slippery after rain.

What to avoid

Attempting the full loop without adequate physical preparation or GPS navigation, as trail markers can be sparse in the outer sections.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to protect the fragile masonry of the historic walls; refrain from climbing on the stone fortifications.
