Interesting facts
1

Gir is the sole place in the world where Asiatic lions exist in the wild outside of African lion populations.

2

The park was established in 1965 specifically to protect the Asiatic lion from extinction when numbers had dwindled to a dozen individuals.

3

Unlike African lions, male Asiatic lions are typically smaller and have a less voluminous mane, often leaving their ears visible.

4

The park functions as a dry deciduous forest, which historically provided the hunting grounds for the Nawabs of Junagadh.

5

The forest contains a significant population of chital, sambar, and nilgai, which form the primary prey base for the big cats.

6

Gir is situated at the western end of the great Indo-Gangetic plain's ecosystem, creating a unique biological transition zone.

7

The Maldhari pastoralist community resides within the sanctuary, practicing traditional co-existence with the lions.

8

The park supports one of the highest densities of leopards in India, though they remain more elusive than the lion population.

Overview

Gir National Park is the world's only natural habitat for the endangered Asiatic lion (Panthera leo leo). Located in the Kathiawar Peninsula of Gujarat, the park spans approximately 1,412 square kilometers of dry deciduous forest, acacia scrub, and grasslands. It serves as a critical conservation site that has successfully increased the lion population through rigorous protection programs. The sanctuary is home to over 600 Asiatic lions and a diverse array of other wildlife, including leopards, sloth bears, marsh crocodiles, and more than 300 bird species. The ecosystem relies on the Hiran, Shetrunji, Datardi, Shingoda, Machhundri, Godavari, and Raval rivers to sustain its flora and fauna. Visitors traverse designated safari routes within the core and buffer zones to observe wildlife in their natural environment. The park's terrain is primarily rugged, featuring undulating hills and steep ridges alongside river valleys.

Photo spot

The elevated watchtowers located near waterholes offer the best vantage points for observing and photographing lions when they come to drink.

Insider tips

Book your safari permits online well in advance, as slots are strictly limited and fill up months ahead.

Bring binoculars and a telephoto lens, as vehicles are strictly prohibited from off-roading or approaching animals closely.

Adhere to absolute silence during your safari to maximize the chances of spotting wildlife that is easily spooked by noise.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to get out of the safari vehicle under any circumstances, as the lions are wild predators roaming free.

Good to know

The park is completely closed to visitors during the monsoon season, typically from mid-June to mid-October.

Etiquette

Avoid bright-colored clothing; wear earth-toned outfits to blend in. Littering and feeding animals are strictly prohibited and punishable by law.
