Overview

The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption and Saint Orontius, also known as the Lecce Cathedral, is the focal point of the Piazza del Duomo, a rare enclosed square. The current structure was built between 1659 and 1670 by Giuseppe Zimbalo, replacing earlier churches from 1144 and 1230. It is characterized by its distinctive Lecce Baroque style, utilizing soft, workable local limestone. The building features two distinct facades: the primary entrance facing the square and a more secondary, decorative side facade. The bell tower, reaching over 70 meters, was added by Zimbalo between 1661 and 1682 and is one of the tallest in Europe. Inside, the cathedral houses twelve chapels adorned with intricate altars and paintings by 17th and 18th-century artists. The crypt, often overlooked, contains frescoes and the remains of early structures. It serves as the seat of the Archbishop of Lecce.
