Overview

Ako Castle Ruins is a flatland-style castle site constructed between 1609 and 1683 by the Ikeda and Asano clans. It is historically famous as the base of the 47 Ronin, who staged their legendary vendetta after the death of their lord, Asano Naganori. The site features reconstructed stone walls, gates, and the Honmaru palace garden, which was restored based on historical excavations. Unlike many Japanese castles, it lacks a multi-story donjon (tenshu), as construction was halted before its completion. The grounds are planted with approximately 200 cherry trees, making it a prominent destination during the spring blooming season. The inner bailey and Honmaru gate were reconstructed in the mid-2000s to reflect the Edo-period layout. Visitors can access the Ninomaru garden, which is designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty.
